Vanishing Edge Engineering

Infinity & Vanishing Edge Pools in Orange County

A vanishing edge makes the waterline disappear into the horizon — and in Orange County, that horizon is usually the Pacific. We build infinity pools on the ocean-view and hillside lots where they matter most, from Laguna Beach canyon rims to San Clemente coastal bluffs, with the slope engineering, retaining work, and coastal permitting those lots demand.

The Coastline Standard

  • Vanishing-edge & negative-edge engineering
  • Built for ocean-view lots in Laguna Beach, San Clemente & Dana Point
  • Geotechnical, slope & coastal permitting handled for you
  • See our San Clemente ocean-view build in the project gallery

How a Vanishing Edge Actually Works

The water falls over one weir into a hidden catch basin, gets recirculated, and the edge reads as a razor line against the horizon. That requires precise surveying — the weir must sit within a fraction of an inch of level — a surge tank sized for the displacement, and a pump cycle dedicated to the edge. It's hydraulic engineering, not carpentry with a view.

Is Your Lot a Candidate?

  • Ocean or canyon view lots, where the edge has something to disappear into
  • Significant grade change — the edge naturally sits on the downhill side
  • Room for the catch basin and equipment below the weir elevation

Coastal & Hillside Permitting

The lots that want vanishing edges — coastal bluffs, canyon rims — are the same lots regulators watch closest. Our San Clemente ocean-view build navigated geotechnical review, slope setbacks, and coastal permitting end to end, and that experience is why we can tell you during design, not after submission, what your lot will allow.

What a Vanishing Edge Costs

Infinity and vanishing-edge pools in Orange County typically run $150,000–$250,000 and up. The premium over a standard pool isn't the tile on the edge — it's the catch basin, the surge capacity, the dedicated pump cycle, and the structural and geotechnical engineering that hillside and bluff lots require.

Engineering and permitting take longer on these lots too, so we confirm what your lot allows during design, before you commit to a vanishing edge.

Infinity Pools FAQs

Vanishing edges work best on lots with a view and a natural drop on the downhill side, with room below the weir for the catch basin and equipment. On flat lots the effect is limited, and we'll tell you that during design.

Typically $150,000–$250,000 and up in Orange County. The catch basin, surge capacity and the engineering hillside lots require are what drive the cost.

They run a dedicated pump cycle for the edge and lose some extra water to evaporation along the weir. Automation schedules the edge to run when you're using it rather than around the clock.

Expect geotechnical review on slope lots, and coastal-zone review on many lots near the shoreline, on top of the standard building permit. We confirm what your lot allows during design, before anything is submitted.
